What's the difference between an HRV and an ERV?

If your home was built to modern energy codes, yes — it's likely too airtight to ventilate naturally. An HRV provides the fresh air exchange a tight home needs without wasting the energy you spent heating it. Many Ontario building codes now require mechanical ventilation.

How often does an HRV need maintenance?

Clean or replace the filters every 2–3 months, and clean the heat exchange core once a year. The outdoor intake and exhaust hoods should be checked for blockage seasonally. We offer maintenance service if you'd prefer to have it done professionally.

Will an HRV make my house cold and drafty?

Accepted Answer

No. That's the whole point — the HRV recovers 70–80% of the heat from the outgoing stale air and transfers it to the incoming fresh air. You get fresh air without the energy loss of opening a window in January.
